San Iconio and the medieval hamlet of Camerota
This trekking takes us from the seaside resort of Palinuro to the medieval hamlet of Camerota, walking along an ancient track on top of the seaside cliffs between Cape Palinuro and the Cefalo bay. Here we find one of the last preserved Aleppo pine tree forests of the Cilento. Walking between the tipical mediterranean maquis we arrive at the abbandonned country house of San Iconio. From here an easy dirt track takes us first to the chapel of Saint Antonio and then to the medieval hamlet of Camerota. Our visit takes us along the tortuous streets of the hamlet and to its Longobard castle. After visiting Camerota we can choose to either turn back by bus or to continue for Marina di Camerota on foot, following the valley of the Fornace (furnace), passing the San Biaggio and the Giovanella caves.
